Homemade Vanilla Extract Using Vodka

by Lynn

Nothing beats homemade Vanilla Extract. It is easy to make and will last for years to come.

My method:

All you will need is 10 Madagascar Vanilla beans, almost 2 cups of  Vodka, and a pint jar, OR two 8 ounce jars.

Instructions For Homemade Vanilla Extract

You will need 5 Vanilla beans for every 8 ounces of Vodka. I like strong Vanilla, so this is how I do it.

Wash and Dry your pint jar(s) with a lid.

Slice the Vanilla beans open and then cut them in half to be fully submerged in the Vodka.

Add to jar.

Add Vodka, leaving one inch of headspace if using a mason jar. If using another vessel, leave a little space.

Tighten the lid.

Shake!

Store in a dark place for six months to a year (the longer, the better), shaking from time to time.

Once you start using the Vanilla, keep the jar topped off with Vodka.

The older this becomes, the less you will have to use. So say if a recipe for your favorite Chocolate Chip Cookies calls for 3 Tablespoons, as your Vanilla ages, you can cut that down to 1 Tablespoon after it has aged.

It’s just that easy!
